A bit of a drive

Discover the journey

Fostering common experiences, discoveries and discussions.

The route

The drivers will be split in two 8 car convoys to help with congestion management. Unfortunately no towing will be allowed as this will have a significant impact on maximum convoy speed and increases the risk of breakages and delays. Our current draft route includes the following key locations (with over 100 towns, settlements and stations passed on the way):

  • Start: Perth
  • Pinnacles
  • Murchinson
  • Canarvon
  • Karatha
  • Derby
  • The Gibb
  • Darwin (Pit / Service Stop)
  • The Savannah Way
  • Cairns
  • Townsville?
  • The great shortcut
  • Alice springs
  • Kalgoorlie
  • End: Perth

Attractions

We will be undertaking a campaign to identify organisations and tour providers that would like to support our efforts and participate in the conversation. This will hopefully result in fully or partially funded:

  • Site visits to a variety of oil and gas and mine sites
  • Participation in tours and a variety of experiences on the way
  • Community visits and cultural tours

We will also be asking the participants if there are any specific destinations that they would like to visit, however it should be noted that this is an endurance driving fundraising event and not a tourist drive, so it is likely that we will not be able to accomodate all requests.

Driver selection

Drivers will be shortlisted based on their experiences, capabilities and committment. Things that we will be looking for include:

  • Experience participating in multi day driving events
  • Willingness to participate in video journaling and documentary
  • Willingness to participate in "fireside" chats on mental health challenges, supports etc.
  • Mechanical, auto electrical and diesel maintenance experience
  • Media, camera work, photography
  • Fundraising experience

Once shortlisted, 2 - 3 driving events and a bi-monthy sundowner/breakfast will be held to ensure compatability amongst the team and to build some comraderie prior to setting off. Final decision of event participation rests with event coordinator.

The cars

A set of compliance requirements are currently being drafted, for all cars that apply. All cars that are shortlisted will have to go through a compliance check with the event mechanic prior to being accepted on the course.

Please note that all cars will also become the sponsorship canvas - so participants will have to agree to have their appropriately decalled.

Financial commitment

  • Initial expressions of interest will be free.
  • Once event is approved for the go ahead, applications will be opened with an application fee of ~$250. If the driver is unsucessfull through the initial validation, $200 will be refunded. If the car is found to not comply with the published requirements at the compliance check, none of the funds will be refunded.
  • Sponsorship will be sought to cover:
    • Fuel
    • Accomodation / camping
    • Spare parts and convoy emergency gear
    • PR/Marketting effort
    • Sponsor management
    • Event management and coordination
  • Fundraising target is yet to be defined, but all fundraising funds will go directly to selected charities. Other similar events target $4,000 - $6,000
